A letter to my kids:
At the age you are now you are lucky because you have enough people around you telling you that you can do anything you want to do, be anything you want to be, go anywhere you want to go – and you wholeheartedly believe it.
As your mum, I hope that never changes.
But as an adult, I know that this will change and soon enough there will be people lining up to tell you that you can’t do it, you shouldn’t do it, you’ll never do it.
I hope that in life, you are lucky enough to fail so that you can become comfortable taking risks, grow from your mistakes, become more resilient and learn what success truly takes.
I hope that you are lucky enough to have someone tell you your dreams are farfetched and unattainable so you can learn that the only opinion that matters – is yours.
I hope you are lucky enough to lose and be able to study it, learn from it and have the self-control to forget about it and move on.
I hope that you are lucky enough to be picked last in a sports team so you can feel not good enough and then go through your life not allowing others to feel that way.
I hope you are lucky enough to experience not being the best at something so you can understand that hard work beats natural talent every day of the week.
I hope you are lucky enough to have your heart broken so you can learn what it means to be a true, honest, loyal friend.
But most of all my darlings, I hope you are lucky enough to have many doors closed in your face so that you can learn there will always be other doors, and if not, to make one yourself.
Love mummy oxo
